QUESTIONS

For days, Butch and Sundance tried a dozen ways to outrun and outwit a super posse hot on their tail… to no avail. Sharing a horse and scrambling over rock did little to throw them off. “Who are those guys?” Irritating. To know your opponent is key, but these outlaws couldn’t see the men who refused to rest. “Who are those guys?” Exhausting. Every resource they had left in the bank, or blown from the train, was spent. But the posse was on the scent, doing things deemed impossible. “We can’t do that. How can they do that? Who are those guys?” But reputation and a white hat was the tell these gamblers knew well that finally identified this tracker and lawman. The game had changed. Cat and mouse turned to the house always wins. Odds were stacked and this time couldn’t be won with a quick fire tongue and gun.

One of my favorite segments of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” is a 27-minute super posse chase sequence that includes the repetition of the line “Who are those guys?” What I remember most is the sound of their boots scooting and scrambling across the smooth rocks. This particular scene was shot in Snow Canyon, Utah.
