STEP AND STEP AGAIN

A hiker with fear in her eyes passes me by, heading down, shaking her head, talking to self. “Those people are crazy! There’s no way I’m doing that.” I give her space to descend. My gaze extends to the end, to the steps that rise and fade into the sky, the very steps she cursed under her breath. Scared to death. Don’t look down. We’ve come this far. Danger is par for this course. Courage is forced to my extremities, to my feet, my hands. Stepping again and again; clinging to chains fixed in the rock. Will my feet slip to the right or left, a fall which leads to death? Taking a breath. Right now I could list a thousand ways I could fail, fall, regret it all, but there is only one thing I have to do. Follow you. And at 1400 feet above where no view can be seen is now the safest place I can be. Thankfulness fills my lungs, joy overcomes, and peace is exhaled to step as I should. “Are you good?” he asks. And with a nod, we continue on a path where angels trod. This step right in front of me is yes and yes; of that I am sure. So step.
