Intrigued by the prickly pear cactus, I chose to paint it showing off its blooms and varying colors of green in the sunlight and shade. In a season when one might be tempted to disregard, even discard, the mass of green paddles, this sun-loving cactus will unfurl tightly wound petals and bleed the colors of royalty. The pauper becomes the king. However, it still wields armor that ward off the pickers and cause its admirers to appreciate at a distance. How fascinating, this bloom that requires pause before coming close.
